The film Bhavna is the saga of an orphan girl who is blessed in many ways. She is both pretty and well educated; she is sensible while being modern in her outlook. She also has a will and mind of her own. The girl's name is Bhavna.

Bhavna, influenced by her emotions in a tender moment, marries a man for whom money means more than love. He is Ajay Kapoor, a painter by profession, who brings love into Bhavna's life. But when Bhavna becomes pregnant, her husband deserts her. Bhavna is in abject despair but she does not lose heart. He child becomes her sole succour in life. All her energies are spent in raising him. She is helped in this endeavour by her childhood friend Shobha. Bhavna repays Shobha's kindness by saving Shobha's chastity from being violated by a friendish man. Bhavna kills Shobha's molester and is sent to jail for it.

Bhavna serves he sentence. On her release she embarks on a new life. She takes up a job in order to educate her son. He boss's attempts to molest her are foiled by a social worker, Seth Ramkrishnan, who seemingly treats her like a sister. But life has more crosses for Bhavna to bear. The same social-worker shatters her dreams of living with dignity. He ruins her life by sullying her honour.

In a society dominated by men, Bhavna is subjected to humiliation after humiliation, first by her husband and then by a so-called brother. Where can Bhavna go now? What should she do? She can challenge the world for her rights as a woman. She can inculcate in women the need to fight for self-respect and honour by giving a new dimension to their role and status. She cherishes the wish to see her son rise in life and win a place of esteem for himself. But how are such aspirations to be realised?

The answer lies in the sensitive approach of producer Devidutt and the directorial debut of Pravin Bhatt as depicted in their film BHAVNA.
